![]() Following are brief summaries of actual School Business Partnerships representing the 460 programs in Anchorage, Alaska and ways that schools can reciprocate. Small Businesses or Organizations: First Alaskans Institute: This organization has established a partnership with an elementary school and developed a program called the “Breakfast Club”. Each morning a group from First Alaskans meets with interested students at the school for breakfast, sharing and reading stories. Tastee Freez: This community oriented business has positively involved itself with all of the schools that are in it’s immediate area. The business provides community service projects in collaboration with the schools and students. There are certain days of the school year that are committed to a specific school when students and staff can work at the business and receive a percentage of the total receipts for their school. E & S Diversified Services: This is a small Dry Cleaning business located within walking distance of an elementary school. The Principal states that the partnership is successful because of the owners strong positive role model and his genuine concern for the students. The owner provides free cleaning service to the school, free clothing for students and opportunities for community service projects. Medium Businesses or Organizations: Subway of Alaska: Subway employees join their school each month at the elementary schools award assemblies. The awards that are given out school wide are based on citizenship and sponsored by Subway. They also provide Subway coupons for incentives throughout the year in support of reading programs and other academic areas. KTVA – A TV Broadcasting Station: The Middle School that KTVA has partnered with boasts its own innovative morning news program. More than 800 students and staff watch their school’s news via a closed circuit television each morning. A team of students, coached by a staff member and KTVA assistance puts the whole program together. The students are now looking to establish a FM radio station, again with the assistance of KTVA. Small Engines Specialties: This business suffered a devastating fire a few years ago. Students from the high school they were partnered with stepped up to help the business recover by providing labor in the clean up. Buoyed by the assistance from the students, the owner moved to a new location. Again the students assisted in the move. The owner has contributed to the partnership by establishing competition and awards for students, internships, jobs and opening his shop as a classroom. Large Businesses or Organizations: GCI – General Communications Incorporated: GCI has internet and video conferencing capabilities with all of Alaska. They have put together a distance learning program that reaches the farthest corners of the state. The basis of this program focuses on Career Exploration Opportunities. Much of the work is done via the internet, but a special component is Video Conferencing twice each month with business professionals representing local corporations. In the summer, students who qualify have the opportunity to participate in paid internships with these businesses. Alaska Department of Fish & Game: In this unique Partnership, students and staff K-12 study the life cycle of the Coho Salmon. Each fall, more than 2,500 students in 60 schools participate in the gathering of eggs and milt from the Coho Salmon. In the classroom they assist in the fertilization and incubation, watching and recording the growth of the fry. In the spring, as a class project and field trip, the smolt are released into local lakes. Supplementing the entire program are numerous class presentations by Alaska Fish & Game personnel. Costco: For the schools that Costco is partnered with, Costco provides every student with a backpack full of school items. This is definitely a highlight of the elementary school students. Throughout the year, Costco assist with food items, needed clothing and employees tutoring students in reading programs. Alaska Railroad Corporation: The Alaska Railroad has partnered with an elementary school and provides many needed services that enrich the whole school. The railroad is in charge of the back to school day where they provide all the food and refreshments for students and parents. Not only do they provide the food, they provide the tents and personnel to prepare and serve. They also spend countless hours in the school working with students in a variety of academic subjects. The railroad also sponsors a high school class, after school hours, that directly leads to summer jobs on the railroad as summer guides. Wells Fargo Bank: Wells Fargo has created and established a Bank within a High School. This Bank is the only student managed and operated bank in Alaska and one of few in the entire United States. Students are trained by Wells Fargo employees and act as tellers, supervisors and managers. Students and staff at the school can open accounts, make deposits, withdrawals and loan payments and receive financial advice. Ways that Schools can Reciprocate • Introduce the schools business partner to students, staff and community as your new partner in education • Recognize the business partner in the school newsletter • Have a special assembly recognizing the business partner • Plan a special business partners day that the whole school participates • Put signs in the schools hallways recognizing business partners • Assign a class or group of students to write “thank you notes” • Plan a community service project that the school can support with the business • Open your school to the business employees, room use, etc. • Invite the business partner to special school events • Have students assist businesses with special projects, choirs singing on special occasions, student art work, etc • Show them your staff room / give them a school cup and invite them in for regular coffee klatches |
